Adobe Captivate for Windows – Installation Guide for SIU-Owned Devices

Introduction

From Adobe: “The 2019 release of Adobe Captivate empowers you to create all kinds of fully-responsive eLearning content with a smart authoring tool. Embrace the future, as you effortlessly design modern immersive learning experiences using VR and 360° media assets. Easily create engaging eLearning content that works across all devices by adding interactivity to existing PowerPoint slides and videos that you record yourself or bring in from YouTube.”

Adobe Subscription

Each Adobe subscription requires a unit purchase and is co-termed to an annual cycle of June 26th thru the following June 25th. The estimated cost of a 12-month subscription is listed on the request form. The initial purchase cost is pro-rated to the remaining months in the term.

Each subscription licenses one person to use the product on up to two devices in different locations, such as:

  • 2 campus offices in different buildings
  • 1 campus office plus 1 remote office
  • 1 campus office plus 1 research lab computer

Requesting Adobe Captivate

Contract Start: 6/26/2022
Contract End: 6/25/2023
Support: ithelp.siu.edu

Complete the Software Request form, select Adobe Captivate from the software list, and submit.

1. Request: Requester completes the software request form.
2. Quote: OIT requests the purchase quote from the reseller.
3. Approve: Upon quotation, OIT sends the purchase request for Fiscal Officer/Delegate electronic signature.
4. Order: Upon approval, OIT places the software order.
5. Distribute: Upon delivery from Adobe, OIT distributes the software and assigns licenses.

Installing Adobe Captivate

Ignore the “Join your team Southern Illinois University – All Campus” email instructions from Adobe. Adobe Captivate is delivered to SIU-owned computers thru Microsoft Software Center for self-service installation. The experience is similar to a mobile app store: browse the software catalog, select the software, then wait for the software to download and install.

1. Remote Workers: If working remotely or from a campus private network, sign into SIU VPN to install.

2. Before Installing: Close all Adobe apps before installing.

3. Software Center – Open the Software Center app from the Windows Start app list or from Windows Search.

4. Applications Catalog – In Software Center, select the Applications tab, then browse, filter, or search the applications catalog, and select the Adobe Captivate application. If the application is missing, close Software Center, connect the computer to the campus network (wired Ethernet, eduroam WiFi, or SIU VPN) for several hours, then try again.

5. Application Details – Note the restart requirement, download size, and estimated time, then click the Install button to start the installation.

6. Installation Progress – Various installer windows may appear or be hidden behind other windows on screen.

7. Installation Status – Upon successful installation, the Install button changes to Reinstall and the Status line changes to Installed.

8. Adobe Sign In (Required) – Open the Adobe Captivate app and sign in or create an Adobe ID to activate the subscription license on the computer.

Troubleshooting

1. Remote Workers: If working remotely or from a campus private network, sign into SIU VPN to install.

2. Software Center: If you receive the error message “This application is not available in Software Center,” then connect the computer to the campus network (wired Ethernet, eduroam WiFi, or SIU VPN) for a few hours and try again.

3. Software Center: Software Center is not immediately available upon computer startup. Wait at least 5 minutes after the computer starts up before opening Software Center.

4. Before Installing Captivate: Close all Adobe apps before installing Captivate.

5. Network Connectivity: If a campus WiFi connection is slow or unstable during installation, switch to a wired Ethernet network connection and try again.

6. Network Connectivity: If a remote network connection is slow or unstable during installation, bring the computer to campus and try again.

7. License Activation: Sign in the Adobe ID to activate an Adobe subscription license on that computer.

8. License Deactivation: Sign out the Adobe ID to deactivate an Adobe subscription license on that computer.

9. License Reactivation: If Adobe license errors occur while signed in with the Adobe ID, sign out and close Captivate, then open Captivate and sign in again.

10. Activation Limit: An Adobe subscription license can be activated on up to two devices at a time. Before activating on a third device, sign out the Adobe ID on one of the first two devices.
