EndNote 21: Manual Installation

Request EndNote

Upon approval of an EndNote software request for a personal device, the installer is distributed by email. EndNote licenses must be updated every three years.

Install EndNote for Mac

1. Installer DMG
Download the EndNote for Mac installer DMG, then open it with Finder.

2. Installer
Close all running applications, then open the Install EndNote 21 installer.

3. EndNote Volume License Version
Click Install.

4. Welcome to EndNote
Click Next.

5. Read Me
Click Next.

6. Thank you for using EndNote
Click Done.

From Clarivate: “Some customers with M1 machines have reported an error message stating that Word can’t load an add-in. The workaround for this is to set Word to open with Rosetta.”

Install EndNote for Windows

1. Installer ISO
Download the EndNote for Windows installer ISO, then open it with Windows Explorer.

2. Installer
Close all running applications, then open the EN21Inst.msi installer.

3. Welcome to EndNote
Click Next.

4. EndNote Volume License Version
Click Accept.

5. Read Me Information
Click Next.

6. License Agreement
Select I accept the license agreement, then click Next.

7. Select Installation Type
Select Typical, then click Next.

8. Select Destination
Click Next.

9. Ready to Install the Application
Click Next.

10. EndNote has been successfully installed
Click Finish.

Troubleshoot

1. Corrupted Installer ISO: To verify successful download, compare the file checksum with the table below. If the checksum does not match, then download again with a different web browser.

2. Third-Party Archive Utilities: Open the Mac installer DMG with Finder and the Windows installer ISO with Windows Explorer. If necessary, temporarily disable or uninstall third-party archive utilities like 7-Zip, WinRAR, and WinZip.

3. Product Key: If prompted for a product key during installation, temporarily disable or uninstall third-party archive utilities like 7-Zip, WinRAR, and WinZip, then eject and re-open the Mac installer DMG with Finder and the Windows installer ISO with Windows Explorer.
