Overview

Managed software for SIU-owned Windows PCs may be delivered thru Microsoft Software Center for self-service installation. The experience is similar to a mobile app store:

  1. Connect to the campus network.
  2. Open Software Center.
  3. Browse or search the software catalog.
  4. Install (or uninstall) software.

Installing Managed Software

1. Connect to Campus Network: If working on campus, connect to the Ethernet wired network or eduroam wireless network. If working remotely or on a private campus network, sign into the Virtual Private Network (VPN).

2. Open Software Center: Open the Software Center app from the Windows Start app list or from Windows Search.

3. Browse or Search Software Catalog: To browse or search the managed software catalog, select the Applications tab for available applications and select the Installation status tab for installed applications.

4. Install Software: Select the Applications tab, select an available application, note application details (like Restart Required, Download Size, and Estimated Time), then click Install. If prompted, close any open applications that are blocking installation.

5. Uninstall Software: Select the Installation status tab, select an installed application, note application details (like Restart Required, Download Size, and Estimated Time), then click Uninstall. If prompted, close any open applications that are blocking installation.

Adobe Acrobat Pro

  1. Turn Off Automatic Profile Selection: See here to sign in or create an Adobe ID and turn off automatic profile selection.
  2. Activate Acrobat Sign: See here to activate the Acrobat Sign e-signature service.
  3. Install Acrobat Pro: Use Software Center to install Adobe Acrobat Pro.
  4. Activate Acrobat Pro: See here to activate Acrobat Pro.
  5. Set Default PDF Application: See here to set Acrobat Pro as the default PDF app on Windows 10.

Adobe Acrobat Pro 2020

  1. Install Acrobat Pro 2020: Use Software Center to install Adobe Acrobat Pro 2020.
  2. Open Acrobat Pro 2020: Open the Adobe Acrobat 2020 app to confirm successful installation.
  3. Set Default PDF Application: See here to set Acrobat Pro 2020 as the default PDF app on Windows 10.

Adobe Captivate

  1. Turn Off Automatic Profile Selection: See here to sign in or create an Adobe ID and turn off automatic profile selection.
  2. Install Captivate: Use Software Center to install Adobe Captivate.
  3. Activate Captivate: See here to activate the Adobe Captivate license.

Adobe Creative Cloud

Note well: These instructions also apply to Creative Cloud single-app subscription plans for Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop, Premiere Pro, etc.

  1. Turn Off Automatic Profile Selection: See here to sign in or create an Adobe ID and turn off automatic profile selection
  2. Activate Acrobat Sign: See here to activate the Acrobat Sign e-signature service.
  3. Install Creative Cloud: Use Software Center to install Adobe Creative Cloud.
  4. Activate Creative Cloud: See here to activate Creative Cloud.
  5. Install Creative Cloud Apps: See here to install Creative Cloud apps.

ArcGIS CityEngine

  1. Install CityEngine: Close all open apps (especially ArcGIS apps), then use Software Center to install the ArcGIS CityEngine 2022.0 application.
  2. Configure CityEngine: Open the CityEngine 2022.0 app, click Southern Illinois University Carbondale, and sign in with your @siu.edu email account. If the Southern Illinois University Carbondale button is missing:
    1. click Your ArcGIS organization’s URL
    2. enter siucarbondale.maps.arcgis.com
    3. check Remember this URL
    4. click Continue
    5. click Southern Illinois University Carbondale
    6. sign in with your @siu.edu email account

ArcGIS Desktop (ArcMap)

  1. Install ArcGIS Desktop: Close all open apps (especially ArcGIS apps), then use Software Center to install the ArcGIS Desktop 10.8.2 application.
  2. Activate ArcGIS Desktop: Open the ArcMap 10.8.2 app to confirm successful license activation.
  3. Note well: ArcGIS Desktop installs with a network license. Remote workers must sign into SIU VPN while using ArcGIS Desktop.

ArcGIS Pro

  1. Install ArcGIS Pro: Close all open apps (especially ArcGIS apps), then use Software Center to install the ArcGIS Pro 3.0 application.
  2. Configure ArcGIS Pro: Open the ArcGIS Pro app, click Southern Illinois University Carbondale, and sign in with your @siu.edu email account. If the Southern Illinois University Carbondale button is missing:
    • click Configure Licensing
    • select License Type – Named User License
    • enter ArcGIS Online Server URL – https://siucarbondale.maps.arcgis.com/
    • click OK

Autodesk

EndNote

  1. Software Center: Close all open apps (especially Microsoft Office apps like Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint), then use Software Center to install the EndNote 20 application.
  2. EndNote: Open the EndNote app to confirm successful license activation.

ERDAS IMAGINE

  1. Software Center: Close all open apps, then use Software Center to install the ERDAS IMAGINE 2022 application.
  2. ERDAS IMAGINE: Open the ERDAS IMAGINE 2022 app to confirm successful license activation.
  3. Note well: ERDAS IMAGINE installs with a network license. Remote workers must sign into SIU VPN while using ERDAS IMAGINE.

JMP Pro

  1. Software Center: Close all open apps (including SAS), then use Software Center to install the JMP Pro 16 application.
  2. JMP Pro: Open the JMP Pro 16 app to confirm successful license activation.

Julia

Mathematica

  1. Software Center: Close all open apps, then use Software Center to install the Mathematica 13.2 application.
  2. Mathematica: Open the Wolfram Mathematica 13.2 app to confirm successful license activation.
  3. Note well: Mathematica installs with a network license. Remote workers must sign into SIU VPN while using Mathematica.

MATLAB

  1. MathWorks ID: Open SIU Carbondale MATLAB Portal in a web browser, click Sign in to get started, sign in the @siu.edu email account, and sign in or create a MathWorks ID.
  2. Software Center: Close all open apps, then use Software Center to install the MATLAB R2022b application.
  3. MATLAB: Open the MATLAB R2022b app and sign in the MathWorks ID.

Mendeley

Python

R / RStudio Desktop

SAS

  1. Software Center: Close all open apps (including JMP), then use Software Center to install the SAS 9.4M7 application.
  2. Note well: If SAS installation fails on the first attempt, retry the install. The SAS installer sometimes needs to install required Microsoft components and quit before it can install SAS.
  3. SAS: Open the SAS 9.4 app to confirm successful license activation.

SPSS Amos

  1. Software Center: Close all open apps (especially SPSS apps), then use Software Center to install the SPSS Amos 28 application.
  2. SPSS Amos: Open the IBM SPSS Amos 28 Graphics app to confirm successful license activation.
  3. Note well: SPSS Amos installs with a network license. Remote workers must sign into SIU VPN while using SPSS Amos.

SPSS Statistics

  1. Software Center: Close all open apps (especially SPSS apps), then use Software Center to install the SPSS Statistics 28 application.
  2. SPSS Statistics: Open the IBM SPSS Statistics app to confirm successful license activation.

Troubleshooting

1. Campus Network Connection Required: If working on campus, connect to the Ethernet wired network or eduroam wireless network. If working remotely or on a private campus network, sign into the Virtual Private Network (VPN).

2. Software Center Cannot Be Loaded: Software Center is unavailable for a few minutes after a computer starts up.

3. Refresh Software Center Catalog: Stay connected to the campus network for a few hours to automatically refresh an out-of-date software catalog, especially for computers that have been offline or off campus. Alternatively, try to force a refresh:

  1. Open Control Panel, open Configuration Manager properties, then click the Actions tab.
  2. Select the Machine Policy Retrieval & Evaluation Cycle action, then click Run Now.
  3. Select the Application Deployment Evaluation Cycle action, then click Run Now.
  4. Wait ~5-10 minutes, then re-open Software Center.

4. Blocking Applications: If prompted, close any open applications that are blocking installation.

5. Pending Restarts: Restart the computer, login, then wait a few minutes before returning to Software Center to retry the installation.

6. Signed-In Users: Restart the computer to sign out other signed-in/disconnected users.

7. Wireless Network Connectivity: If a campus wireless network connection is slow or unstable during installation, switch to the Ethernet wired network and try again.

8. Virtual Private Network (VPN) Connectivity: If a Virtual Private Network (VPN) connection is slow or unstable during installation, bring the computer to campus and try again.
