Overview

Managed software for SIU-owned Windows PCs may be delivered thru Microsoft Software Center for self-service installation. The experience is similar to a mobile app store:

  1. Connect to the campus network.
  2. Open Software Center.
  3. Browse or search the software catalog.
  4. Install and uninstall software.

Install/Uninstall Managed Software

1. Connect to Campus Network: If working on campus, connect to the Ethernet wired network or eduroam wireless network. If working remotely or on a private campus network, sign into the Virtual Private Network (VPN).

2. Open Software Center: Open the Software Center app from the Windows Start app list or from Windows Search.

Troubleshooting

1. Campus Network Connection Required: If working on campus, connect to the Ethernet wired network or eduroam wireless network. If working remotely or on a private campus network, sign into the Virtual Private Network (VPN).

2. Software Center Cannot Be Loaded: Software Center is unavailable for a few minutes after a computer starts up.

Software Center cannot be loaded

3. Refresh Software Center Catalog: Stay connected to the campus network for a few hours to automatically refresh an out-of-date software catalog, especially for computers that have been offline or off campus. Alternatively, try to force a refresh:

  1. Open Control Panel, open Configuration Manager properties, then click the Actions tab.
  2. Select the Machine Policy Retrieval & Evaluation Cycle action, then click Run Now.
  3. Select the Application Deployment Evaluation Cycle action, then click Run Now.
  4. Wait ~5-10 minutes, then re-open Software Center.

4. Blocking Applications: If prompted, close any open applications that are blocking installation.

5. Pending Restarts: Restart the computer, login, then wait a few minutes before returning to Software Center to retry the installation.

6. Signed-In Users: Restart the computer to sign out other signed-in/disconnected users.

7. Wireless Network Connectivity: If a campus wireless network connection is slow or unstable during installation, switch to the Ethernet wired network and try again.

8. Virtual Private Network (VPN) Connectivity: If a Virtual Private Network (VPN) connection is slow or unstable during installation, bring the computer to campus and try again.
