Secure a Compromised Email Account

SIU Information Security monitors email systems for indicators of compromise and malicious behavior, allowing issues to be addressed quickly and proactively.

If suspicious activity or a potential email compromise is detected, Information Security may temporarily lock your SIU email account, often before you are aware there is an issue.

Locking the account prevents unauthorized access and stops further misuse of your email while the issue is addressed. During this time, no one(including you) can sign in until the account has been secured. This proactive step helps protect your personal information as well as other SIU users from further impact

Tips for Keeping Your SIU Account Secure

You can help protect your SIU account (and the campus community) by following these general security best practices:

  • Use a strong, unique password
    • Create passwords that are long and complex
    • Avoid reusing passwords from other websites or services
  • Be cautious with email links and attachments
    • Do not click links or open attachments from unexpected or suspicious emails
    • Watch for messages that create urgency, ask for personal information, or prompt you to “verify” your account
  • Never share your credentials
    • SIU IT staff will never ask for your password by email, phone, or text
    • Do not share your login information with anyone
  • Report suspicious activity
    • If you believe you may have clicked a malicious link or entered your credentials into a suspicious site, contact SalukiTech immediately
  • Lock your device when away
    • Always lock your computer or mobile device when stepping away, especially in shared or public spaces

Following these steps helps reduce the risk of account compromise and supports a safer computing environment for everyone at SIU.
