Updating Your Name or Email Address at SIU
Legal Name Change
If your legal name has changed, you’ll want to update your official university records to ensure they are accurate. Depending on your role with the university, this may affect records such as payroll, enrollment, and other administrative systems. To avoid delays or accidental reversals, it’s important to update your information in the correct order and in the appropriate systems. Please follow the instructions below based on your role with the university.
Who to Contact
- Student only:
- Contact the Registrar’s Office to update your student record.
- Employee only:
- Contact Human Resources (HR) to update your employee record.
- Both student and employee:
- Start with HR to update your employee record. After HR confirms the update, contact the Registrar’s Office to update your student record.
- Note: HR’s AIS system is the primary source for name information and can overwrite other systems. If the Registrar updates your name first, the change may be reversed until HR completes the update.

Preferred Name Change
A preferred name is the name you would like displayed in SIU systems when a legal name is not required. For example, Liz instead of Elizabeth.
To request a preferred name change, click the button below.
Note: If you would like your email address to be updated so that it reflects your preferred name change, click “Yes” on Question 4. To keep your email address as-is, click “No.”
Updating Your Email Address (Without Changing Your Name)
SIU email addresses are typically formatted as:
firstname.lastname@siu.edu
If your email address needs to be updated to reflect a previous name change (or if your current email address is very long due to multiple first or last names) you can request an email-only update without changing the name on your account.
To request an update to your email, click the button below. When asked what type of request you are submitting, select “Change Email Address Only.”
This option allows your email address to be updated independently of any legal or preferred name changes.
