Obtaining an SIU email
SIU email addresses are automatically generated based on the following…
- Students: you must enroll in at least one course. Your email will be generated 24-48 hours after registration.
- Faculty/Staff: your email is generated after your contract has been fully processed by HR.
University email addresses generally take the format of firstname.lastname@siu.edu
Network ID Claim
Claiming your network ID is the process where you set recovery information and your first password, which allows you to login to your email and most other SIU websites. You can directly access the account claim form here: Identity Claim
The form asks for your first name, last name, birth date, and dawg tag. Then, you’ll add a recovery email and/or phone number. The last step is setting a password.

Microsoft Authenticator
Once you are enrolled or employed at SIU, you are required to setup Microsoft Authenticator. This is our two-factor authentication to help keep your account secure. The first time you sign into your email, you’ll receive a prompt saying our organization needs more information.
Continue reading through the prompts and clicking ‘next’. If you already have the app installed, you can skip those steps. Then, you’ll receive a QR code to scan from the Microsoft Authenticator app (not from a camera app!).
