Video Transcript in Microsoft Stream

Overview

In this how-to guide, learn how to generate, download, edit, and upload transcript for a video file in Microsoft Stream. In addition, learn how to keyword search in Transcript.

Generate Transcript

Step 1: Open a video file in Stream. Navigate to the upper right corner and click on Video settings icon from the menu.

Step 2: Click on Transcript and captions.

Step 3: Click on Generate.

Step 4: Wait for several minutes for the generation to complete.

Step 5: When the transcript generation is complete, the feature is automatically enabled and closed caption becomes available.

Step 6: Viewers can click on cc at the bottom right corner of the video to turn on closed caption.

Download Transcript

Step 1: Click on three dot menu below Transcript and captions.

Step 2: Hover over download and two file types are available for download. Note that only vtt file can be uploaded to Microsoft Stream.

Step 3: Select Download as .vtt.

Edit Transcript

Step 1: Locate the downloaded vtt file and open it. Notepad may need to be used to open this file.

Step 2: Make desired changes to the document. Click on File in the upper left corner and then click on Save or save as to save the changes.

Upload a Revised Transcript

Step 1: Click on Upload.

Step 2: Click on Select file.

Step 3: Locate the vtt. transcript file. Click on the file and click on Open.

Step 4: Click on Done.

Step 5: The uploaded transcript in available under Transcript and captions.

Note that both versions of the transcripts are turned on by default. They are both available for viewers for closed caption if left unchanged.

Step 6: Disable less preferred transcript if desired by clicking on the disabling toggle on the right.

Replace a Transcript

Step 1: Click on the three dots menu under Transcript and captions and click on Replace.

Step 2: Click on Select file in the pop-up window.

Step 3: Navigate to the location where the transcript is stored. Select the file and then click on Open. Note that only vtt. file can be selected and uploaded to Stream.

Step 4: Click on Done in the popup window.

Step 5: Now the transcript has been replaced.

Edit Transcript Directly on Stream

Step 1: Click on X sign to exit Video settings.

Step 2: Click on Transcript from the video settings menu on the right.

Step 3: Hover the cursor over a line of transcript and then click on Edit.

Step 4: The transcript box is activated and can be edited. Click on Done after intended changes are made.

Step 5: Now the changes are saved to the transcript.

Keywords Search in Transcript

Step 1: Click on X sign to exit Video settings.

Step 2: Click on Transcript in the menu on the right.

Step 3: In the search box, enter a key word and then click on the magnifying class to execute the search.

Step 4: Click on the transcript line where the keyword is highlighted.

Step 5: This will sync the video to the exact time when the word is said.
